The Progyan Foundation for Research and Innovation (PFRI), in collaboration with the Centre for Atmospheric and Climate Sciences (CACS), Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), and with the support of IndusInd Bank, is pleased to announce the workshop “Climate-Resilient Agroforestry Systems: Multi-Dimensional Assessment, Policy Recommendations, and Science-Informed Scaling Strategies.”
Date: 09 July 2026
Time: 09:00 AM – 01:00 PM
Venue: Hall III (A.M.M. Arunachalam), IC&SR Building, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai
Climate change is increasingly affecting agricultural productivity, ecosystem services, and rural livelihoods, necessitating integrated and evidence-based adaptation strategies. Agroforestry has emerged as a scientifically validated nature-based solution that enhances climate resilience, strengthens biodiversity conservation, improves carbon sequestration, and supports sustainable livelihood systems. Recognizing its growing importance, this workshop aims to convene researchers, policymakers, development practitioners, financial institutions, and other key stakeholders to deliberate on scientific evidence, field experiences, and policy pathways for promoting climate-resilient agroforestry systems.
The technical sessions will focus on the following thematic areas:
The workshop will provide a multidisciplinary platform for knowledge exchange, stakeholder engagement, and evidence-based dialogue aimed at translating scientific research into actionable policies, scalable interventions, and sustainable development pathways. The deliberations are expected to contribute to strengthening climate adaptation planning and promoting resilient agricultural landscapes across India.
PFRI is proud to collaborate with CACS, IIT Madras, in advancing interdisciplinary research, innovation, capacity building, and policy engagement to foster climate resilience, sustainable agriculture, and nature-based solutions.
Progyan Foundation for Research and Innovation (PFRI) an independent policy science research Kolkata-based nonprofit organization registered in West Bengal as Section 8 Company (CIN U80301WB2022NPL251470) is a certified organization working towards four dimensions viz. 1. Climate policy research 2. Conservation of natural habitat, biodiversity, and socio-ecological production landscapes and seascapes 3. Research on livelihood sustainability 4. Circular economy and green energy to sustain environmental, social, economic development and poverty alleviation.
Our efforts over the past year have been concentrated on comprehending, protecting, and advancing sustainable methods to guarantee these essential ecosystems' improved resilience and health.
To preserve the diversity of species. Sustainable utilization of species
PFRI has been actively engaged in the conservation and restoration of mangrove ecosystem

I have been associated with Progyan for the past three years. They have set up a fully functional laboratory in a remote location in Sundarbans which is highly commendable. Progyan has supported two M. Tech. students in their dissertation work, one on float farming and the other on embankments. Additionally, the program is associated with a PhD student working on biofilms. I found Dr. Dey and Dr. Dey to be very dynamic and knowledgeable. The field staff are very helpful. I look forward to having more collaborative projects with Progyan.
It is my great pleasure to work with the Progyan Foundation for Research and Innovation (PFRI) as an Environmentalist from BSMRAU, Bangladesh. PFRI has already proved itself to research climate change and its impact on a sustainable environment in the South Asian Region. I am highly interested in working with PFRI on the capture of atmospheric carbon and the development of bio-fertilizers using microbes in collaboration with an international funding organization.
Progyan has been supporting project works of MTech and PhD students of Jadavpur University for the past three years. Their research personnel and field staff are knowledgeable and helpful. Their involvement in multifarious projects on social and environmental issues is commendable. I plan to continue my collaboration with Progyan, particularly to transfer scientific knowledge and research to the field.
Since the last three years, the Progyan Foundation for Research and Innovation (PFRI) is working profoundly at the science society interface. PFRI works towards the advancement of scientific knowledge across different socio-ecological production landscapes and seascapes (SEPLS) and developing climate-resilient frameworks with operational guidelines for natural resource conservation in this climate milieu.
I have been associated with Progyan for the past two years. For the last few years, they are wholly associated with research and sustainable development for the sake of the environment and society. We are collaboratively working on different aspects of science and research and in 2022 weather station system was installed in the field research station of Progyan situated in Indian Sundarban.
Progyan Foundation for Research and Innovation has already proven itself for research on climate change and its impact on a sustainable environment in the South Asian Region. Their involvement in multifarious projects on social and environmental issues is commendable.
In today’s context, 'Progyan Foundation for Research and Innovation' is one of the sincere Civil Society Organisations, working for the Sustainable Development of Production System with minimum disturbance to Environment with a specific blending of Science and Innovation.
